Greetings LARAEC Conference Attendees,

School and College District leadership are implementing necessary measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus as recommended by Public health officials. One of these measures is the cancellation or postponement of all large gatherings. Please know, ensuring the safety and well being of conference attendees is of utmost importance.

Unfortunately, this means that the LARAEC Conference has been cancelled

We appreciate all of the work that went into producing a five-district collaborative conference. Thank you to all the presenters for preparing amazing and innovative presentations. Thank you to our Conference Committee members and our Innovation Award Committee for their work in making this conference extraordinary.

At the heart of the LARAEC Conference is the celebration of inspiration and innovation from  teachers, staff, partners, and exhibitors. With that in mind, we will keep you posted as we make plans for how to best share the awards and workshops that make up The LARAECexperience: 2020 Vision for the Future.

Thank you for your partnership,

Michele and Justin
LARAEC Conference Co-Chairs

Help! How do We Manage Mixed Abilities in an ESL Class?

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Are you challenged by teaching learners at different proficiency levels? Or meeting the needs of less literate learners? Experience whole group and cross-ability activities that build community and language skills but which don’t require extra prep. Activities for like-ability break-out groups not requiring teacher facilitation will also be discussed.

Changes in current government policy related to immigration have impacted enrollment in adult education ESL programs. As a result, many such programs are offering fewer leveled classes and more mixed ability classes. Even within a single level class, there are different literacy levels. Effective instruction in multilevel classes requires adjustment in teaching strategies but which doesn’t require extra hours of preparation time. This practice-based session focuses on strategies that build community and language skills across levels through whole group and cross-ability groups and on strategies for effective break-out groups without teacher facilitation. The presenter will demonstrate the strategies and will provide a handout of sample activities.
